Nobody lived in the past
Three David McCullough books, covering exceptional feats of invention and engineering
"There's no such thing as the past. Nobody lived in the past." - David McCullough
If you'd like to learn about exceptional feats of invention and engineering, written in engaging page-turning prose, here are three David McCullough books I recommend.
1. The Wright Brothers https://amzn.to/47AYrPY
An almost unbelievable story of how two brilliant bicycle mechanics, with few resources, used hard work, first-principle thinking, and determined optimism to teach the world how to fly. An easy read with exceptional pacing and research into the Wright family papers. This is one of my favorite books.
2. The Great Bridge https://amzn.to/45ggIAE
This book will make you appreciate the Brooklyn Bridge even more. It details the engineering and human ingenuity it took to build the world's longest suspension bridge, and the first bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, over the course of 14 years.
3. The Path Between The Seas https://amzn.to/45glZbA
An incredible story about constructing the Panama Canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for the first time. This dramatic account details innovations in technology and medicine, and the courage of many men and women. Winner of the National Book Award for History.
P.S. David McCullough is my favorite historian. His captivating prose is lively, accessible, and often reads like a dramatic novel.
